The Myth of the “Clash of Civilisations”
Edward Said was a Palestinian-American academic, writer and advocate for Palestinian rights. In 1998 he delivered a lecture at the University of Massachusetts, challenging the notion expressed by Samuel P. Huntington that one of the characteristics of the contemporary world (after the end of the Cold War) was a “clash of civilizations” (Western, Islamic, Confucian). Said argued that reducing groups of people and parts of the world into simplistic abstractions was not only bad scholarship but led to dangerous real life consequences. Instead, Said foregrounds the importance of learning to coexist with difference – vital then; vital now.
